Product Questions

At the Celtic Roots studio we carefully select the ancient bogwood and prepare and carve it in our own studio in Ballinahown village Athlone Co. Westmeath.

Each piece is carved by hand and finished with Beeswax locally sourced.

Bog oak is an ancient living oak tree preserved in the bogs for approx 5600 years.

The wood colour ranges from  dark brown to jet black in colour.

In ancient time the oak was associated with strength and endurance.

Bog yew is an ancient yew tree and also preserved in the bogs for approx 4800 years.

Bog yew wood is bright brown in colour with hues of red on occasion.

In ancient times the yew tree was associated with wisdom and rebirth.

We also know from research that after the ice age – the proportion of pine trees growing on the landscape to the number of oak  trees and yew trees was 100:10:1

We do not crave bog pine as it is a softwood and does not preserve so well.

Each collection is released with its chain /leather /pearls priced as part of the overall design. Please email info@celticroots.ie to check if we can make a similar pendant without a chain etc. We are happy to discuss this.

Sustainability Questions

Bogwoods are the remains of ancient trees that were buried under the bogs from thousands of years. During turf /peat production in Ireland in the 1950’s 1960’s and 1970’s the trees were removed from the bog as part of that industrial process. They were dumped on headlands and bog areas left to rot and decay. In these times it was not appreciated as having any artistic value.

In the early 1990’s the peat company supported the opening of our studio so we could give new life to this waste material. This ancient wood is dried slowly and carved into these jewels. Part of our journey is explaining the importance of these rotted trees as part of our ancient civilisation.

Our pearls are farmed. We believe environmental standards are fundamental aspects of responsible pearl farming and, where possible, we choose to work with suppliers and pearl farmers who share our beliefs. We purchase just a small number from a safe supplier.

We source our sterling silver components from Cooksongold.

Cooksongold are part of the Heimerle + Meule GmbH group and certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. They have a policy regarding recycled silver and eco silver. By the end of 2022  will endeavour to use only eco sterling silver.

Our copper torc and  copper collar necklaces are made from recycled copper piping sourced in our local town.

We believe that our sculptures and jewellery deserve boxes that are ready for gifting and these boxes are 100% biodegradable.

Currently, our outer cardboard boxes are widely recycled; our local shop and school supply their excess packaging to our studio.

We hope when you receive an outer recycled box that you know it’s our way of supporting the environment. All our inner packaging is 100 % recycled.
